Assistant General Counsel, Legal Affairs, Litigation

The Corporate Care, Litigation and Patient Care advises on legal and regulatory issues related to patient care, litigation, and guardianships. This Assistant General Counsel will provide advice to hospitals and other affiliates as assigned and set forth on the attached Exhibit, legal issues related to behavioral health, workplace violence, and regulatory issues.

  • Advise on legal and regulatory issues related to patient care in various settings including hospitals, outpatient facilities, physician practices, nursing homes, and other venues as required;
  • Advise on, supervise, and file guardianship petitions on behalf of System provider entities, including special medical guardianships and conventional guardianships as required;
  • Advise on patient, workplace violence, and Security issues that may arise from time to time in the Systems behavioral health units;
  • Advise on professional liability and general liability litigation;
  • Assume primary responsibility for patient care issues in the hospitals listed on the attached schedule and issues which may arise from time to time in the outpatient facilities and physician practices and other providers in the service areas of those hospitals. Patient care shall mean daily questions, length of stay issues and Long Length of Stay Committees, end of life issues, guardianships, regulatory issues, workplace violence and other issues which may arise from time to time related to clinical regulatory and patient issues.
  • Attend litigation claims conferences for the Hospitals and other claims conferences as may arise from time to time;
  • Advise on regulatory and other issues which may arise from time to time related to quality, patient safety, regulatory reporting, patient standards, and other related clinical and patient care issues.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school;
  • Ten years experience with the law department of a large sophisticated healthcare system or a law firm with relevant experience;
  • Demonstrated professional, interpersonal, and leadership skills and writing and communication skills and experience providing outstanding legal services a a range of senior executives;
  • Demonstrated time management skills, work organization and ability to mange multiple diverse project;
  • Active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction and eligibility for admission to the New Jersey bar as in-house counsel;
  • A roll up the sleeves approach.
