Job Overview:

The Cancer Registrar must select and abstract all cases of malignancy diagnosed and/or treated at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children s Hospital of New Jersey, cases with a history of cancer or cases of consultation only into the Cancer Registry Data Base for submission to the State of New Jersey. The cancer registrar will assist the Manager in completing information requests, case finding activities, and monitoring the quality improvement process.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Certification (ODS) by the National Cancer Registrars Association, or working towards ODS certification, is required with working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, oncology disease process, coding, and staging
  • Minimum of two years experience in the Cancer Registry or a related oncology health care field
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently on repetitive clerical tasks
  • Data entry demonstrating high standards for accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Flexibility to adapt to new and changing situations, requirements, and project assignments
  • Works effectively in a team environment

Preferred:

  • Minimum of an Associate s degree in any health-related field preferred
  • Knowledge of multiple EMR systems including EPIC preferred
  • Knowledge of cancer registry software including OncoLog preferred

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • ODS - Oncology Data Specialist certification, or working towards certification

  • Part Time (20 Hours)

Essential Functions:

  • Familiarized with the ICD-10 coding systems, American College of Surgeons, Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) Manual, AJCC Staging Systems, Collaborative Stage and SEER Multiple Primary & Histology Rules
  • Knowledge of cancer disease process, including medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and medical procedures
  • Records pertinent cancer data from the medical record(s) about the patient, the disease, cancer-directed treatment and the disease process from the time of diagnosis until the patient s death
  • Ensures complete and accurate data abstracts are collected and maintained for all patients diagnosed and/or treated at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children s Hospital of NJ
  • Assist with case-finding of cancer cases according to the requirements set forth by the New Jersey State DOH Cancer Registry and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Case-finding involves reading pathology reports and medical records for every patient within the hospital who has been diagnosed with cancer or a CNS benign/borderline tumor
  • Maintains an Excel spreadsheet on all abstracted cases that are missing treatment information
  • Responsible for mailing treatment letters to physicians and hospital cancer registries
  • Performs Follow-Up on all analytic cases in the database from the current reference date. Keeping up-to-date follow-up is an integral part of the Registry
  • Information that the ODS gathers will help calculate survival rates for various cancers, aids in finding geographic areas with high numbers of specific cancers, and supports cancer research by monitoring clinical trials for new treatments
  • Strictly adheres to all applicable regulations and guidelines governing cancer registry data collection, including compliance with HIPAA and state-specific regulations, while maintaining patient confidentiality
  • Actively attends and participates in departmental, organizational and/or educational meetings, as requested
  • Maintains annual competencies set forth by department and organization
  • Performs other duties/projects as assigned to support the department
