Job Overview:

Administers therapies designed to maintain or restore normal gas exchange function in the cardiopulmonary system. Acts as a resource for the health care team on subjects relating to but not limited to care of patients with cardiopulmonary disorders.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduate of an approved school of Respiratory Care with a minimum, of an A.A.S. degree in Respiratory Care (or equivalent), BS/BA degree preferred.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Five years clinical experience required.
  • Experience as an instructor at the College level a plus.
  • Required Possess current New Jersey license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • BLS Certification through the American Heart Association
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) are highly encouraged.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Required Maintain annual competencies in the following age specific populations: Neonatal, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with the Director, Supervisors, Clinical Coordinator and Medical Director to identify the educational needs of the Respiratory Department and develop programs to meet those needs
  • Develop and coordinate all educational opportunities offered through the Respiratory Department. Provide continuing education both directly as an instructor and indirectly through preceptors or educators, including Respiratory Therapists, Nurses and Physicians. Provide educational opportunities on all shifts. Assist in the clinical rotation of Respiratory students
  • Develop, coordinate and participate in the orientation of new staff. Monitor and record the progress of employees on orientation, advises retention or dismissal of new employees based on performance and outcome of orientation
  • Assess all aspects of the educational process, including the assessment of staff learning and educational needs. Develop curricula to meet identified needs. Implement educational programs and offerings and assess outcomes. Utilize various methods including lectures, demonstrations and computer-based instruction
  • Plan and deliver educational in-services covering Respiratory procedures and interventions to all shifts. Establish a monthly calendar to meet the needs of the Department
  • Develop and administer competencies for employees based on innovations or regulatory requirements and report results to Department leadership. Recommend corrective action plans for deficiencies found or instances of non-compliance
  • Develop working knowledge of regulatory Standards, such as TJC, CMS and DOH for example, and incorporate these Standards into educational offerings, staff competencies and orientation programs
  • Attend external and internal educational programs as part of continuing education. Complete all mandatory competencies on time
  • Monitor the completion of Mandatory Education, Competencies, tests and skill validation including CPR certifications. Maintains files/records and ensures annual compliance
  • Develop, administer, oversee and maintain a staff preceptor program. Train staff therapists to participate in the orientation program and act as a subject-matter expert for competency and skill check day
  • Fulfill the role of staff therapist or charge therapist. Provide coverage for other Respiratory Care Practitioners as necessary
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with Nursing Education and Medical Staff Education. Provide educational support to other disciplines on Respiratory Care topics such as Nursing Orientation and new Resident orientation
