Job Overview:

The Community Prevention Specialist assists with all aspects of planning and implementing activities throughout Ocean County associated with carrying out the mission of the DART Prevention Coalition, Communities that Care and/or Southern Ocean County Interfaith Advocacy and Leadership, cSOCIAL, Network. This includes conducting community assessments, planning prevention programming, implementing community-level prevention strategies, and evaluating the effectiveness of prevention efforts. The Community Prevention Specialist will also assist the Manager in recruiting and maintaining a diverse Coalition that represents all sectors of the Ocean County community.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor s degree
  • CPS within three years of hire and pursue ongoing training and education
  • In lieu of the CPS include: Certified Health Education Specialist, CHES, Master's degree in Public Health, MPH, doctoral degree in a medical, health, or behavioral science

Preferred:

  • Bilingual a plus

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • Must obtain certification as a Prevention Specialist

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Day shift
  • Full-Time
  • Occasional evenings and weekends required

Essential Functions:

  • Implement environmental prevention strategies based on Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) 7 Strategies for Community Level Change, including public presentations, work with various community sectors, and local advocacy work
  • Assist Community Prevention Managers in leading Coalition through Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to build and maintain a strong coalition and ultimately create positive community level change
  • Assist with data collection for community profile and maintain statistics on events and presentations for internal tracking, outcome evaluations, and grant reporting requirements
  • Assist with preparation and dissemination of notices, agendas, and minutes for all general membership and workgroup meetings
  • Assist with and/or become a trained facilitator in YMHFA, tMHFA, Nurtured Heart, Set Me Free Project s READY to Stand human trafficking prevention curricula, and Trauma Informed Trainer to support trainings
  • Assist with completion of all funder compliance and reporting requirements as well as adherence to the DART Strategic Plan
  • Attend health fairs, community events, and other community-based initiatives as a representative of the DART Prevention Coalition, SOCIAL Network, and Institute for Prevention and Recovery
  • Represent the Institute for Prevention and Recovery as appropriate at local, county, and state organization meetings
  • Attend trainings and workshops to develop professional skillset
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Involvement or experience in health education, policy/planning, and/or community organization
  • Knowledge of prevention strategies, Strategic Prevention Framework, and CADCA s 7 Strategies for Community Level Change
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development/training, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias
  • Knowledge of schools and other community agencies and systems
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including one-on-one, public speaking, and informative presentations.
  • Knowledge of research/data gathering process
  • Foundation of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) knowledge regarding evidence-based prevention
  • Passion and dedication to substance-use issues
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and be adept at MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint applications)
