Job Overview:

Assumes responsibility for cleaning, inspection, testing, assembling, wrapping and sterilizing of all patient care instruments. Maintains records as required by regulations and departmental policy, supplies CMMC with both sterile and non-sterile products, picks up and delivers instruments and devices being reprocessed from all patient units, OPD clinics, L&D, OR and SDS.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous hospital Sterile Processing experience required.

Preferred:

Certifications and Licenses Required (if applicable):

  • Sterile Processing certification is required upon hire

Scheduling Requirements (non-exempt positions):

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in maintaining all areas within Sterile Processing in a safe and clean manner.
  • Understands the cleaning products and procedures used in SPD and is able to choose the appropriate cleaning method for each item.
  • Refers to and complies with all manufacturers written instructions for cleaning, assembly and sterilization
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic concepts of Infection Control, and can adapt this knowledge to Sterile Processing procedures.
  • Understands the basic concepts of steam and low temperature gas plasma sterilization and safety precautions necessary in the operation of the steam and gas plasma sterilizers.
  • Understands sufficient medical terminology to discuss supplies needed for medical and nursing personnel.
  • Operates and maintains all mechanical equipment including sterilizers, washers, sonic cleaners, etc. within SPD. Complies with all safety precautions. Reports malfunctions of equipment.
  • Replenishes supplies to sterile storage. Examines and rotates sterile supplies and trays for maximum utilization.
  • Handles telephone information requests with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality. Stat request are handled appropriately.
  • Identifies, assembles, packages, wraps and sterilizes all reusable instruments and technique trays with 99% accuracy.
  • Maintains surgical instruments in good working condition and make sure all instruments are inspected and tested; documentation of the testing per policy.
  • Facilitates prioritization of needs for the OR and SDS; ensures all devices/instruments processed in timely manner.
  • Documents all cleaning, sterilization and high level disinfection processed. Performs quality assurance testing per policy and documents same.
  • Inspect, sort, assemble, processes and maintains surgical instruments for OR, SDS OR, Labor and Delivery, Emergency Department, Outpatient Clinics, Radiology, patient care departments.
  • Picks up carts with used instruments for reprocessing; delivers sterilized instruments, linens and devices to OR, SDS and other units as assigned.
